Melbourne was the host city for the recent Swimming World Championships
The venue for this years meeting, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, or MCG, opened in 1854 It is and has been the venue of some of the largest sporting events to occur in Australia. Hosted the first Australian Rules football game in 1858. Site of the first cricket test played between Australia and England in 1877. Hosted the first One Day Cricket International in Australia 1970 Hosted the Olympic games in 1956 and Hosted the Commonwealth games in 2006. Home of the AFL Grand Final Hosted Bledisloe Cup MatchesThis venue is an appropriate site for this, the historic first meeting of the newly renamed ANZCP. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the first open heart procedure on Cardiopulmonary Bypass to take place in AustraliaThe meeting is timed to occur at one of the busiest times in Melbourne's sporting and social calendar, Melbourne Cup week. The Melbourne Cup is the premiere horse race in the Southern Hemisphere. It is run on the first Tuesday in November, therefore Tuesday 6th is "Cup day" for 2007. It is a day when Melbourne and indeed all of Australia stop to watch the running of “the Cup”. Thursday 8th of November is "Oaks day" or ladies day at the races. Visitors to Melbourne should take the opportunity to participate in the Melbourne's world famous Spring Racing carnival.
